Highlighting broad-scale morphometric diversity of the seabed using geomorphons

Morphometric diversity is an important component of overall seabed geodiversity. Automated methods for classification morphometric features (ridges, peaks, valleys etc.) provide a convenient way classifying large volumes data in consistent and repeatable basis assessing diversity. Here, we apply ‘geomorphons’, pattern recognition approach to feature classification, 100 m resolution multibeam bathymetry the Barents Norwegian Seas, Norway. The study area spans depths from few metres nearly 6000 across several geological settings. Ten unique are delineated by geomorphon analysis. From these results, compute variety per 10 km2. This simple ‘geomorphon richness’ measure highlights broad-scale area. We compare richness results with terrain attributes physiographic regions. Our new regional insights, which together more detailed information will help guide follow-up surveys as well identifying hotspots, may require special management.
